It’s easy to feel trapped by modern life, at first glance it seems like we’ve never had it so good – a high standard of living with plenty of lifestyle choices and plenty of shops and services catering to our every need. The more we want, the harder we work, the more we can get our hands on. But this comes at a cost.
Most of the hours in our day are spent working, often long hours at a job that doesn’t make us happy. We need to do this just to get by, to put a roof over our head, to pay the utility bills and to put food on the table. The time spent enjoying our home and lifestyle is often much less than the time we spend, nose to the grindstone, at the job we are dissatisfied with. So how do we break out of this cycle? How do we live our lives with more freedom and satisfaction day-to-day?
Unless you are expecting to win the lottery soon, or are about to inherit a fabulous free home.. the answer is to make lots of small changes to your life and the way that you live it, and to aim towards the long-term ideal of a thrifty and sustainable lifestyle. Thrifty, because the less you spend, the less you need to earn, and sustainable because everyone on the planet has a responsibility to live as low-impact a life as possible and to ensure that we maintain a healthy environment for our future generations and for the other species that we share this world with.
